Paolo Guerrero’s Flamengo debut last night ended in success as his struggling side defeated Internacional 2-1 at the Beira Rio stadium in Porto Alegre.
The Peruvian opened the scoring with a debut goal in the first period before providing the winning goal for Everton. An evening that largely meets the former Corinthians striker’s expectations:
“The team played well, we remained focused, we did not leave any space for our rival. I knew the value of the group, I was confident, I’ve faced my colleagues. The forward was a handful throughout the game in Valparaíso, though it was strike partner Claudio Pizarro who fired in the only goal.
Guerrero had been involved in the other major incident of the match, with Venezuela defender Fernando Amorebieta shown a red card in the first half for stamping on the Flamengo player.
The victory for Peru means that all four teams in Group C now have three points to their name going into the final round of matches.
